Department Profile
The Department of Commerce was established in 1995 to address the increasing demand for the subject, offering a Bachelor's degree program in B.Com Co-operation. In 1998, the department introduced a career-focused B.Com course, B.Com Commerce Tourism and Travel Management, aimed at enhancing skills, knowledge, and leadership qualities for success in the tourism and hospitality industries. In 2013, the department expanded its offerings with the introduction of the Master's degree program M.Com Finance, aimed at promoting higher education in Commerce.
All programs offered by the department are designed to provide professional qualifications that meet high demand, preparing students to excel as business leaders. Commerce remains a highly sought-after field in the contemporary academic landscape, underscoring its relevance and popularity as one of India's premier career paths, attracting students from diverse backgrounds.
The department is supported by a dedicated team comprising ten faculty members. Eight of the faculty members hold PhD. Mr.Hashim M, HoD of the department serves as an elected Senate Member of the University of Kerala. Two faculty members Dr Ezreth and Dr Shijina A.S are research supervisors in the Faculty of Commerce, University of Kerala. Furthermore, the department submitted a proposal in 2022 to gain recognition as a Research Centre of the University of Kerala.
Overall, the Department of Commerce is committed to delivering excellence in education and contributing significantly to the field of commerce through research, teaching, and professional development.

PG Program
B.Com Co-operation
B.Com Co-operation, is a specialized undergraduate degree program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cooperative principles, practices, and management. This program integrates traditional commerce subjects with a focus on cooperative management, economics, and related fields. Students also study core commerce subjects such as accounting, finance, economics, and business management to build a strong foundation in commerce principles. B.Com Co-operation graduate students are exempted from undergoing Junior Diploma in Co-operation (JDC) and Higher Diploma in Co-operation (HDC). The program enables the students to attend the exams conducted by Kerala Co-operative Services Examination Board and various Co-operative services examinations conducted by Kerala Public Service Commission. B.Com Co-operation graduates have diverse career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. They can work in cooperative banks, credit unions, agricultural cooperatives, consumer cooperatives, marketing cooperatives, and various government agencies involved in cooperative development. Additionally, graduates can pursue further studies or professional certifications to enhance their career prospects in cooperative management and related fields.
B.Com Tourism and Travel Management
B. Com in Tourism & Travel Management (TTM) was launched in 1998 as the first vocational degree course offered by the institution. The vision was to equip students in improving their knowledge and skill in the hospitality field, especially in the tourism and travel industry so as to open myriad new career opportunities to hundreds of our students. B. Com- TTM as a specialized degree programme facilitates the students to acquire an in-depth knowledge and enable skill enhancement opportunities world over, in this ever expansive arena of the travel and tourism industry. The curriculum has been specially designed to provide a theoretical aspect as well as on the job training experience to all the students by way of 45 days’ internship, in the numerous reputed organizations and firms in the travel and tourism sector. Most of the previous students who had excelled during the training programme have been given placements by the respective organizations where they had undergone job training. Moreover, the Tourism & Travel Management department of the institution has signed MOU's with two of the well-established organizations in Kerala namely, the Akbar Academy & the Al Hind Academy. Students who had successfully graduated as well as others who were able to just complete this course are eligible to apply for and opt numerous job profiles such as travel executives, travel managers, travel agents, professional guides, travel coordinators etc. Acknowledged by everyone world over as the most progressing industrial sector, the travel and tourism industry offers exciting job opportunities which attracts the youth. Moreover, after the completion of the B. Com - TTM, the students can also choose to pursue its postgraduate studies in MTTM, or can opt any other regular commerce post graduate programmes like M. Com, MBA, or towards other academic trajectories that leads to pursuing Doctoral research, etc. Apart from these prospects, as part of the new FYUGP, we have inducted more innovative and career oriented courses namely Aviation and cargo management, Logistics and Supply- Chain Management, Innovation and Start- ups etc., which entails greater scope of employability and ensure attainment of success in our students' life and career. We are proud to remember that from the beginning years, the department has been able to produce university ranks. Most of our alumni are well placed in the National and International Airline companies, Airports and in some of the prestigious institutions, inside and outside the country. We proudly acknowledge that some of our students with noble vision and great entrepreneurial goals have set up their own travel companies and are providing employment to scores of other people.
M.Com Finance
M.Com Finance, is a postgraduate degree program tailored to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in the field of finance. It offers an in-depth understanding of financial theories, practices, and analytical tools necessary for navigating the complexities of modern financial markets and institutions. The program emphasizes both theoretical concepts and practical applications, equipping students with analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills essential for careers in finance. Students have to undergo two week internship during the course of study so that they will get hands-on experience in industry. Graduates of M.Com Finance have diverse career opportunities in various sectors of the economy. They can pursue roles in corporate finance departments, investment banks, asset management firms, consulting firms, financial advisory firms, insurance companies, government agencies, and regulatory bodies. Additionally, they can explore opportunities in academia, research institutions, and financial journalism. Furthermore, they are eligible to appear for UGC NET examination to be qualified for lectureship and doing research in the field.
